Why teams switch

What JPD users keep telling us

Jira Product Discovery is a solid prioritization tool for internal teams. But if you need customer-facing feedback, it falls short. Here's why teams make the switch.

No public feedback portal

Jira Product Discovery is an internal-only tool. There's no way to create a public-facing board where your customers can submit ideas, vote on features, or track progress. You need a separate tool for that — or Boarbs, which does it out of the box.

Locked into the Atlassian ecosystem

JPD only works on Atlassian Cloud and requires Jira Software to unlock its core value. If your engineering team uses Linear, GitHub, or Asana, JPD adds complexity without benefit. Boarbs is standalone — works with any stack, no ecosystem required.

Built for PMs, not for customers

JPD's UI is designed for product managers doing internal prioritization. Your customers can't just visit a page and vote. Boarbs gives voters a clean, fast experience — email-only voting, no accounts, no Atlassian login required.

Enterprise setup, startup needs

Getting JPD running means configuring Atlassian Cloud, setting up creator licenses, linking to Jira projects, and managing permissions. Boarbs takes 2 minutes — create an account, name your board, share the link.

JPD's creator pricing model explained

JPD splits users into "creators" (paid) and "contributors" (free). Creators are product managers who manage and prioritize ideas — they pay $10/mo on Standard or $25/mo on Premium. Contributors can comment and vote for free, but only internally.

The catch: contributors still need an Atlassian account on your site. There's no way for external customers to participate. If you need public feedback collection, JPD doesn't cover it — you'll need a second tool regardless.

Honest take

Who should switch — and who shouldn't

Boarbs and JPD solve different problems. Here's an honest look at when each tool is the right fit.

Switch to Boarbs if…

Boarbs is the better choice when:

  • You need a public-facing feedback board where customers can submit and vote on ideas
  • You want voters to participate without creating Atlassian accounts
  • Your engineering team doesn't use Jira Software
  • You want a standalone tool that works in 2 minutes, not days
  • You need a public roadmap and changelog to keep customers in the loop
  • You want transparent, board-based pricing that doesn't scale with headcount

JPD might be better if…

Consider staying with JPD when:

  • Your team already uses Jira Software and needs discovery-to-delivery traceability
  • You only need internal prioritization — no customer-facing feedback collection
  • You rely on advanced RICE scoring, formula fields, and matrix views
  • Enterprise compliance requirements lock you into the Atlassian ecosystem
