Merge Duplicate Posts

Combine duplicate feedback while preserving votes, comments, and tags on one primary post.

Duplicate requests split votes and conversation across several posts. Boarbs lets organization admins combine them into one primary post without merging automatically.

Review Suggestions While Writing

When someone writes a post, Boarbs shows similar posts from the same organization. This happens in the organization app and on public Portal, Widget, and Embed boards.

You can:

  • upvote a similar post
  • open it and add a comment
  • continue creating a new post when it is genuinely different

Selecting a suggestion never merges anything. Admins still merge reviewed duplicates from post detail or bulk actions. The internal write path is unchanged.

Merge From a Post

Organization admins can open a post and select Merge in the post header.

  1. open the duplicate post
  2. select Merge
  3. choose the post that should remain
  4. confirm the merge

The open post becomes the source and is merged into the selected post.

Merge Several Posts From the Board

To clean up several duplicates at once:

  1. select two or more posts in the board table
  2. select Merge Selected
  3. choose the primary post to keep
  4. confirm the merge

What Is Preserved

The primary post keeps its title and description. Boarbs transfers votes, comments, and tags from each source post to it and avoids duplicate votes or tags. If only the source has a linked Linear issue, the link moves to the primary post. If both posts have links, the primary post keeps its link and the source link is removed. Creators and subscribers of both posts receive a short email with a link to the surviving post. The person who performed the merge is not emailed.

Undo a Merge

Organization admins can open the surviving post, find the source under Merged posts, and select Unmerge. Boarbs restores that source post and moves back the votes, comments, tags, and dependency links recorded when it was merged.

If A was merged into B and B was merged into C, Unmerge on C restores the whole recorded chain. Nested recorded merges come back with their attributed votes and comments. Older merges without unmerge history stay merged because they do not retain the mapping needed to attribute transferred data.

Linear issue links stay on the surviving post when a merge is undone. Boarbs does not guess where a link should move after either post may have changed.

What Merge Does Not Do

Merge does not currently:

  • merge posts automatically based on similarity
  • send email when a merge is undone
